almost four months!

I have just been vaguely going with 4-5 months for emma, so they would have gone through similar things at the same time. A good way for them to meet, and emma has kept tabs on her ever since?

yes! that sounds awesome to me! we could assume they would have seen each other a fair bit during rehab? in which case, if emma approached ellie and talked to her (because ellie would be way too freaked out and hella guarded to approach anybody when she became conscious of her situation), ellie would definitely have been very closed off and distant, perhaps even hostile towards emma at first. once she had the energy to be hostile, that is, haha. but then, yeah. emma probably became a cautiously familiar face as a result.

we can work out things more in detail once i've got ellie going in game/when emma and ellie first start tagging in game?

That sounds good to me! all things considered, hostile is kinda understandable, and since she's out of the foster system she's seen some cagey individuals, shall we say.
