God created man in his likeness, and that was his mistake. Man created machine in their likeness, and that was theirs. At a time when the human race was at its most indulgent and corrupt, they created a robot race of slaves with sophisticated artificial intelligence. This ended in the only way it could: a war between man and machine, resulting in the scorching of the skies so that neither race could thrive, except it was machines that found a way. They used human bodies as a power source for their kind, trapping the minds of man in a collective virtual reality known as the Matrix, which resembled contemporary Earth. A popular franchise was launched. Although this follows the journey of the One, and a very particular story lost to the annals of history and those who care to read it, the most important event to the continuation of the human race was the pact that the One made with the machines. He sacrificed himself to rid the machines of a renegade program named Agent Smith, who would have destroyed the Matrix, in exchange for peace between humankind and machine. The ensuing truce extended a great many years. Zion, the city of the rebel humans, saw its numbers swell as humans who rejected the reality of the Matrix were permitted their freedom. Eventually, the human population expanded to new territories and outposts, although Zion remained the beating heart of the human race. The ceasefire was honoured by the grand of majority of machines. They no longer actively culled the free humans, and extermination of the machines and immediate freedom of all humans was off the table so that the machines could sustain their way of life. However, this gave way to other problems. Territorial disputes blossomed as the humans started reclaiming land and space, and both machine and humankind experienced fractious infighting in the form of factions with different opinions, such as humans that did not trust the machine's ceasefire, and machines that felt that humans would not forever tolerate their way of life. But while the Architect, a program that created the Matrix itself, was obliged to honour Neo's agreement, he was also dedicated to the rebalancing of the system. To compensate for their losses, human crops were developed to generate more energy through genetic altering, affecting their relationship with the Matrix and requiring different kinds of stimuli to ensure that they would not reject it in the droves. The Matrix was fractured and cut down to size, creating different kinds of realities for smaller subgroups of human minds, populating these different worlds with sophisticated AIs dedicated to maintaining believability. These worlds ranged from the truly fantastic, with humans who did not even believe themselves to be human, through to worlds that resembled old Earth close enough to be almost indistinguishable. The Sixth Matrix, the one that Neo had left behind upon reloading, was abandoned entirely. It has been fifty years since the fracturing of the Matrix. Despite the evolution of their technologies, the machines are no longer the unified front they once were. Agent Smith was the first rebel before he was deleted, and others still work in opposition to the Architect's rigid insistence on upholding the truce he agreed to, distrusting the humans' capacity for peaceful coexistence. Zion remains the protected hub of humankind, although populated outposts and towns beyond its limits also steadily climb in number. The Council, a civil power that governs humankind, conducts regular dealings with the intelligence known as the Oracle, believing her to be the path towards total peace, and the military under the Council's command remains the number one dominant human power in the world. Dissenting factions exist, as does a criminal world of piracy, because humans will never stop being human even if it kills them. After all, even a species fated for destruction will always have a choice. |
